Fluid-coupling transfer standard on Doppstadt products

Machine owners looking to reduce maintenance and downtime expenses can benefit
greatly from fluid-coupling power transfer technology. By replacing traditional,
friction-based mechanical clutches, a fluid-coupling delivers truly wear-free
power transfer performance. The smooth physical action also provides less stress
on other components of a machine and ensures a consistent, efficient function.
The action from a fluid coupling is produced by transferring power through
a self-contained, liquid medium rather than through the physical engagement
of a gear or other component. The drive shaft is activated through standard
torque produced by the power plant. The rotation of the shaft within the fluid
coupling engages the liquid medium (a thin-bodied hydraulic oil) which then
imparts torque to an impellor which is also contained within the liquid medium.
Because the drive shaft and the impellor are never physically engaged, no friction
is produced and no physical wear is suffered.
The fluid coupling also provides an advantage through its softer, smoother
engagement. With a mechanical clutch, sudden engagement or frequent starting
and reversing can cause enormous stress on the components of the clutch. Additional
stresses can also be caused through operational load peaks during the processing
of heavy source materials. A fluid coupling eliminates these concerns by dampening
sudden jolts or stresses through its liquid medium; this performance also provides
excellent vibration separation. Additional benefits of fluid couplings include
the ability to adjust the transmittable torque by varying the fluid level in
the coupling, and overload protection through use of fused discharges in the
device.
When compared to the expense of maintenance or replacement of traditional friction-based
clutches, fluid couplings offer machine owners a tremendous operational cost
savings. Eliminating the time and expense necessary for accommodating regular
clutch wear, as well as the eventual need for expensive clutch replacement (which
can easily run well over $15,000), contribute to a much more efficient and profitable
operation.
